As a recent artist in residence in Chengdu, China, I had the honor of introducing western brush lettering to hundreds of teenagers. In return, I received so much — my own excitement mirroring theirs when in museums I saw black spontaneous strokes that held white space so elegantly, the white spaces as well planned as the black shapes. This series is inspired by what I saw, smelled and heard — nine million people walking, strolling, biking; the fast-moving chopsticks and slurping and shouting of communal meals.
